Vom Wellenreiten inspiriert, wurde Billabong 1973 an der australischen Gold Coast von Gordon und seiner Frau Rena Merchant gegründet. Ziel war es Surfwear wie Neopren und Lycras sowie Swimwear wie Bikinis oder Boardshrts für Surfer herzustellen. Ebenso Alltagsbekleidung für die Surfer wie Tank Tops, T-Shirts, Shorts usw. ... Wellenreiten bzw Surfen eroberte in den 80er und 90er Jahren nach und nach die ganze Welt. Ebenso wuchsen diese kleinen Surf-Brands, welche diesen Lifestyle perfekt zum Ausdruck brachten zu weltumspannenden Unternehmen heran. Neoprens, Boardshorts und das klassische T-Shirt oder FlipFlop sind auch heute noch die Bestseller von Billabong und somit Sortimentskern, auch wenn Billabong-Streetwear und deren Träger längst nicht mehr alle Surfer sind - so drückt das Billabong Logo dennoch viel Leideschaft und Lebensfreude im Zusammenspiel mit der Natur aus.
Der Ausdruck Billabong kommt übrigens von dem Aborigine-Wort für "Wasserloch" oder "Oase", wie sie im Süd-Westen von Australien, nahe der Australischen Gold Coast weit verbreitet vorkommen und zum Landschaftsbild gehören.
